Hot Chilli Sambal is to Malaysians what ketchup is to Americans. The word Sambal refers to a combination of ground spices and aromatics, with the main ingredient being fresh red chillies. While most Malaysians simply use it as a condiment, this product has proven to be a versatile ingredient that may be used in countless ways. Customers have used it as a marinade, both alone and in combination with other products. The distinct umami of fermented shrimp paste makes the sambal a new and exotic ingredient to add bold flavor and spiciness to any dish.
In 2015, I met Auria at the Summer Fancy Food Show in Manhattan and fell for her charming personality and her amazing Malaysian condiment line. RLC was still finding its footing and I did not add the product to the collection, but knew I eventually would. Fast forward to 2018, when I get the list of sofi award winners and see Auria's name pop up not once, but twice! I immediately emailed her and ordered a case of everything she makes. The flavors are authentic, not dumbed down to make it more marketable and while some describe her products as "weird," we all know that that's exactly the kind of stuff I am drawn to and add to the shop. And, we all know that I'm literally putting my name behind everything Riley/Land carries, so there's not a clunker in the bunch.

Don't be scared by the "Hot Chili" in the name, it's mostly flavor you will taste, not heat. The consistency allows you to take just as much as you need without worrying about overdoing it. Apparently in Malaysia, they use this on everything in the same way as we use ketchup here in the United States. Believe me, this is much better than ketchup and far more natural. Order a jar and you'll find yourself reaching for it again and again!
This is my new favorite condiment. I add it to everything. It’s not too hot and has actual flavor, not just heat. So yummy!
