Debbie and I sat down in the lab to create samples for the first half of 2025 candles back in early February. And there’s a story behind nearly every thing I do, so let me share it.
February, as you’ll remember, had people from both political parties walking on proverbial eggshells over all of the immediate changes that took place following the inauguration. And it felt like nothing but chaos. The week we met, I had been rewatching Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal, and I wanted to be like Jake and Olivia and escape to an island 100 miles off the coast of Zanzibar and drink ‘94 du Bellay and forget the world. Thinking of their happiness always brings me to my favorite scene of the series, where Liv is going through albums and drinking wine, natch. She pulls out Stevie Wonder’s phenomenal Songs In the Key of Life (released September 28, 1976 - 28 days after I was born) and plays “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing” and they dance and are happy. Then she’s kidnapped. But that’s another story.
The happiness in that brief, fleeting moment - coupled with the desire to “run away to an island far far away” - built this candle. Made using chamomile, rose, sage, petitgrain, mandarin, volcanic ash and sage, it helps transport you to a peaceful place, with black sand beaches and a cool breeze. Let the worries lift off your shoulders and relax for a while. The world will still be there when you come back.
Boilerplate: every month I create a new proprietary scent and we make a limited number of units. They’re all made with vegan soy, hand-poured, using double wicks. They burn beautifully for about 60 hours.
