New Family Heirlooms

New Family Heirlooms

Some of our most prized possessions are not the most expensive things in the room or the most ornate. Often, they are the items that are used daily; the things we grab and use without even thinking about it, as it has become a go-to in our lives. The things we rely upon day after day.

Last summer I broke my large vintage Pillivuyt au gratin dish. I used it all the time - from roasted Brussels to fresh tomatoes all summer for my pastas and soups, roasted salmon to my famous peach cobbler… To say I was devastated would be an understatement. I had had it for more than 20 years. I missed it nearly every time I cooked.

And that is why I refer to The Riley/Land Collection’s items as “new family heirlooms.”

The wooden spoon beside the stove that fits your hand just right.
The large board that always sits to the left of the sink because it is invariably needed.
The linen towel draped over the oven handle.
The bowl that sits on the counter, waiting to be used.

These pieces do more than perform a task. They help shape a home.

Maintaining a selection of items that are handily available, always within reach, helps life run smoothly. And, as life runs more smoothly, our moods, our experiences, and even our meals are lifted. That is why finding the right pieces for you and your home is always paramount. There is a certain confidence in living like this.

The homes that stay with us are usually not the ones that feel overly done. They are the ones that feel lived-in and experienced. The ones where the useful things seem to land exactly where they belong, and stay there. Not because someone staged them, but because that is where life happens.

Over time, certain pieces stop being just possessions and start becoming part of the household itself. You reach for them without thinking. They become tied to the way you cook, the way you serve, the way you welcome people into your home. They are woven into the everyday rhythm of the life.

That’s why we grow attached to these things. They are present in our lives, daily, and with that they end up holding our memories. And memories are, in many ways, the exact thing that gives life its richness.
