At The Riley/Land Collection, every material we choose is intentional. For our candles, that includes the vessels, the labels, the wicks, the fragrances, and probably most important, the wax.
Beeswax was the benchmark for candle-making for centuries, but that eventually gave way to paraffin. And just like that, paraffin became the industry standard. It makes sense; it’s cheap and holds a strong fragrance throw. Beeswax is expensive and doesn’t hold the fragrance as well, so logically it was a smart play. But, paraffin is mostly extracted from the distillation of petroleum, making it unsustainable - and, honestly, unhealthy.
Soy emerged as an alternative, because it offers a clean, beautiful burn. While soy doesn't naturally produce the same fragrance throw as paraffin, a skilled chandler knows how to formulate around those limitations. The result is a candle that's richly scented without compromising the benefits of pure soy wax.
Soy wax is made from soybeans, a renewable resource, and burns more slowly than many traditional waxes. You can enjoy your candle longer, while experiencing a consistent fragrance throughout its life. It also produces very little soot when burned properly, minimizing smoke and helping keep both your candle vessel - and home, for that matter - clean.
In recent years, it has become common for mainstream candle companies to blend their soy wax with paraffin. That does provide a less-expensive option, but for The Riley/Land Collection, I believe sticking to pure soy aligns better with the quality standards we require for everything we create. It reflects our commitment to creating products that are thoughtfully made rather than simply manufactured.
Every candle is hand-poured - by real, live human beings - in small batches using premium fragrance oils and cotton wicks. Our focus is craftsmanship, not shortcuts.

The Riley/Land Collection bears my name - Joseph Riley Land - and that isn't something I take lightly. Every product we create reflects that responsibility. From the earliest concept to the final details, each decision is made with intention, whether it's the wood we select, the fragrance we blend, or the choice to use 100% soy wax instead of a less expensive alternative.
I'm proud to put my name on everything we make. More importantly, I'm committed to ensuring every piece continues to earn it. As long as The Riley/Land Collection exists, that promise won't change.
