Kanthas are hand-stitched throws made using three layers of vintage cotton sari fabric. Reversible, with distinctive colors/designs on both sides, these pieces work as a throw in your living room, out by the pool, laid across a table as a tablecloth, hung on the wall as a tapestry, and more. Each one will speak to you, telling a different story. No two are alike.
Because I am enamored with learning everything i can about a product before I start to sell it, I did a lot of research on where these were made, what the vibe of the region is, etc. They're made in West Bengal, which is situated between the Himalayas and the Bay of Bengal in Eastern India. The state is slightly smaller than the US state of Maine, but is home to 91 million people. By contrast, California's population is 39.5 million.
The kanthas are made in the rural part of the state, so I chose words that play with that theme for the names. A barsaat is a rainfall that literally reshapes daily life; the rainy season, a time when fieldwork pauses and working indoors increases. Like, hand-stitching kanthas.
