Hot chicken has been a staple flavor of Nashville since the 1930s, when Thornton Prince III came home late one night and his girlfriend decided to cook him a dinner that would burn the taste buds out of his mouth. Instead, he loved it and opened a restaurant. Decades later, Nashville Hot Chicken has gone mainstream, with restaurants the world over adding it to their menus. Use this blend of garlic, cayenne, onion and more combines potent flavor and a slow burn. Use it to season your chicken, fry it up and serve with a slice of duck bread and pickles.
Besides chicken, though, has become my go-to pepper in the kitchen. Try it on your pizza instead of crushed red. Dust your popcorn with a healthy dose and see it come alive. Sprinkle over your scrambled eggs. Throw into any dish that needs some pep. Or, sprinkle a little into your next margarita and dance with abandon!
This family-owned business has been around since the 1960s, creating locally made, globally sourced spices and seasoning blends that celebrate the flavors of the world. In 2013, McKinley Thomason decided to create an offshoot brand that honored his father's memory and help the farmers who grow the herbs and spices they use, concurrently. He named the business J.M. Thomason (his father's name) and partnered with Heifer International to help Guatamalan farmers navigate the tricky world of business. For every can sold, they donate a small percentage to the non-profit. Thomason also, however, works behind the scenes to help these farmers push grant proposals, plant more trees, etc.
