We made our first cake stands when my niece was in elementary school. She graduated from college in 2025. Every birthday cake that's been baked - or brought in from any given bakery - has sat atop that cake stand. And not just hers; we pull it out for every cake-having celebration. And that, my friends, is exactly why I refer to our pieces as "new family heirlooms."

A classic design - this pedestal cake stand is perfect for cakes, pies, cookies, and more. Made from a mix of woods with a timeless silhouette, it is a gorgeous piece.

The cake stand series from The Riley/Land Collection is one of my favorite, with each one being named after Southern grandma's. With names like Miss Hattie Jane and Miss Nettie Sue, they imbibe the essence of the women who made layer cakes such a necessary part of our traditions.

The Miss Cynthia is named for one of my best friends. She isn't a grandmother, but she is a church lady and she does happen to make the best pound cakes I've ever had. So, it seemed appropriate. Also, most cake stands from RLC are one-of-a-kind. This one is too, but we do maintain the same woods in this one each time. We use Poplar, a creamy white/pale yellow sapwood to light yellowish-brown or greenish heartwood, often with distinctive gray, green, purple, or even blue mineral streaks. Named for Cynthia because 1. Poplar is a main thoroughfare in Memphis, her home and 2. the purple undertones represent Sewanee, where Cynthia and I met.
